Introduction to Competitive Tumbling and Trampoline

AAU/USTA is our governing body for the sport of TNT at AGC. TNT competitions involve performances on three events. They include trampoline, double mini, and power tumbling.

Performances -

Trampoline routines consist of one ten touch pass. In TNT some skills require an athlete to touch the bed on the trampoline more then one time, therefore counting for two or more touches.

Double Mini involves three passes with a minimum of two touches and a maximum of three touches on the bed of the double mini.

Power Tumbling consists of two passes. The number of skills is based on the skill level the athlete is at. Therefore some passes involve three skills, while others involve four or more.

Judging -

Each routine receives a score given by a panel of judges. The judge evaluates the routine using shorthand and takes deductions for errors in the execution of the routine. The judge's scores are then combined with a difficulty score added in at the end. While judging is objective, it is impossible to remove subjectivity. In the end, the gymnasts are usually ranked in the correct order, making up for high or low scoring meets.

AAU/USTA -

AGC consists of six levels; beginner, sub-novice, novice, intermediate, sub-advanced, advanced. Athletes are placed in categories based on level, age, and gender.

Competitions -

Invitational Meets: Most meets in Michigan are generally invitationals. They are hosted by individual clubs, and offer individual and team competitions. The meets are sanctioned by the USTA/AAU and must follow the rules and regulations determined by the USTA/AAU.

State Championships: Are required for ALL levels.

USTA Nationals: The USTA National Championships are offered to all team members and is generally held the third week in June.

The competition season at AGC runs from October - July. During this time the main focus of the team is to work on perfecting routines for competition time. Summer training is held July - August. Summer training is essential in the development of strength training, and new skills. Due to this type of training approach TNT is a year round sport.

Level Advancement -

There always seems to be discontent, confusion and in some cases mistrust in the area of level advancement. Most of the problems result purely from lack of communication, but some of the problems occur from little league parent syndrome (i.e. parents dealing with personal ego issues). Granted it is helpful to know the parents goals and aspirations for their child as it is helpful getting the parents view on what the goals of the child actually are. The bottom line however, that we have to maintain the integrity of the program, its policies and procedures. Being the gymnastics professionals, it is our duty to protect what we feel is in the best long term interest of our program and the athlete's development.
